      There is a growing consensus that genetic mutation isn’t as random as we thought: the structure of DNA itself means some regions are more likey to mutate than others. Palindromic sequences – where the DNA reads the same way forwards or backwards (e.g CAATGTAAC) look like they might be more likely than other sequences to cause rearrangements of big chunks of chromosomes. We aren’t completely sure why that is yet, but my lab has recently found some mutations which support this theory…
