Gather the evidence together think about what it means, do some more experiments based on what you concluded and repeat until you have formed some kind of understanding of what it is you’re trying to study. Often you are specifically testing a hypothesis for example “Gene X is required for Y” you might remove Gene X in a model organism and see if it can still do Y.

Ultimately once you’ve put together what you think is a strong argument with evidence in support of it you would write up a scientific paper describing your work that would then be assessed by other scientists. If they feel it is correct and of interest the paper would then be published in a scientific journal for others to read and learn from.

If you’re working towards a product, a clinical drug, or something that might be patented and private you wouldn’t necessarily publish the work, but it might be used in support of funding or a patent application for example.

Also unpublished work is used to support academic and charitable grant applications to support further work in the area in your research.

We test it to confirm it’s correct, and then publish our results in scientific journals. These are published on line, so you can share your data and knowledge with other scientists, who may go on to do more research based on your findings

If it’s hard evidence we publish it, make it available to humanity and hope that someone else will get new ideas based on it.

Remember: science should always be done for the benefit of mankind as a whole!
