The answer is an idea in the book and I can remember the exact bit. There is a section right at the start of Genes (or there was in GenesII) that explains the idea of mapping genomes by recombination. I though it was incredibly elegant and it appealed to my love of finding genuinely novel ideas to solve an apparently impossible problem. Science is full of beautiful solutions to problems and, for me, they’re very satisfying.
