People tend to be scientists because they like it. They like the research and finding things. Also it is a more relaxed environment therefore some people like it more than industry

It’s not that low – it’s still enough for me (although I don’t have children or anything expensive like that).
Jobs aren’t just about how much money you make – you spend most of your adult life working so it’s important that you enjoy what you do, not just the stuff you can afford to do on weekends because of it. I do science because I find it fascinating, I get to work with people who I like and I’m not stuck behind a desk doing something boring and meaningless all day!
I think it helps me get up in the morning knowing what I do will one day have a positive impact on someone else.

I am a scientists because it’s the way I have to go in order to become a professor and become licensed to teach at universities.

A lot of other people do it because they like doing it and others because they are just stuck in a bad career.

The pay isn’t that low unless you’re comparing it to people working in the financial services industries.

Compared to other professional jobs it doesn’t fare too badly and offers a lot of benefits in terms of the freedom you have in your work and the often less formal management structures. You also get to contribute to society in what I think is a very positive way for the greater good.

Apart from that a lot of scientists are vocational, it’s just something they love doing and wouldn’t want to be doing anything else.
