No one knows exactly, and to tell you what we DO know I would probably have to type all weekend (and do lot’s of research because I don’t know most of it myself).

A nice simple way to think about it is that every neuron in your brain can either fire or not fire at any given moment. This makes your brain a binary system, which operates just like a computer, which operates in a language of zeros and ones – on and offs.

It’s actually a lot more complicated than that because each position can fire slowly, continuously, or suppress other regions from firing. These extra levels of operation are why our brains are more powerful than computers (at least for the moment – people are trying to apply biological rules to computer systems all the time), and are where we start to understand how it works a lot less well.

In essence your brain is just a very big and complex biological computer. Thus it is possible to alter it’s behaviour.

Unfortunately no one really knows how it exactly works and I believe that we probably never will. You can never fully understand a system that you are part of.

There is a lot of research into the human brain. Both for the purpose of curing diseases and technological advancement like computer-brain interaction. I am sure there will be a lot of great discoveries been made on that field soon 🙂
